Larceny

As much as I'd love to have a pocket full of cash to drop on high end whiskey every time I go to the liquor store, that's just not reality. The bright side to that tragedy is not having to break the bank to go home with something great to sip on. Enter: Larceny -- Heaven Hill Distillery's 92 proof wheated bourbon deeply loved by myself and my wallet. Named after treasury agent John Fitzgerald's affinity for stealing bourbon out of Kentucky rickhouses, Larceny doesn't come with any of the baggage that may latch onto some of today's most popular bourbons -- there's no scorching the earth to track it down and outrageous price fluctuations are, for the most part, a non-issue. And, most important, Larceny can hang its hat on being an outstanding bourbon, not just for the price, but period.
What I love most about Larceny is its balance. It has great character, but its elements are able to work extremely well together. On the first nose pass I picked up hints of oak, cereal and peanuts. Then, after adding a little water, I noticed a dark cherry note opening up. There's a very silky mouthfeel on the palate with the peanut note showing up in the taste along with caramel and some light spice. The finish sticks around a while with the spice vamping up some, but still remains fairly smooth, especially for a 92 proof bourbon.
You have to give credit where it's due -- Heaven Hill really has a gem in this bourbon. Larceny is one of my favorite sipping bourbons and I enjoy not having to go on a never ending adventure to track down my next bottle. And, with such a friendly price tag, I never feel guilty about restocking this bottle whenever I can. Also, because of the sweetness provided by the wheated mashbill, it's a bourbon I'd pass to anyone looking to get their feet wet with whiskey. Ultimately, Larceny doesn't disappoint and with its barrel proof expression on the way, I'll be looking for more of the same quality. I'm sure Heaven Hill has it handled.
